Sun Protection
Sun protection is a necessary part of daily skincare. Too much sun, while a good source of vitamin D, helping the skin to produce it, causes skin damage with prolonged abuse leading to skin cancer. But with so much hype about sun blocks and creams, most people find it hard to know what is a good sunblock.
Most Sunblocks or creams contain harmful chemicals
For starters, most commercial sun creams or blocks contain many harsh chemicals that are thought to cause disruption or permanent damage to nervous, immune or respiratory systems to which young children and old are especially susceptible. Among most harmful are benzophenones and PABAS which can form carcinogens when mixed with other chemicals.
Apart from the slew of chemicals including sulphates, parabens, mineral oils, fragrances (petroleum based), colours and PEGs, all of which has nothing to do with sun protection, there is also the myth about SPF .
What is SPF? (Sun Protection Factor)

SPF refers to the time it takes for the skin to burn multiplied by the SPF factor. Therefore it takes skin 75mins to burn instead of 5mins in the sun if a SPF 15 sunblock is used.
What is not known is that generally the higher the SPF the greater the amount of harmful chemicals in the sunblock or cream. Often the chemicals cause more harm then the protection intended. So is SPF rating important? Yes, but the truth is a good SPF 15+ already offers ample protection. The filtration with SPF 15 is already 96% and with SPF 30, it is 98%. So do you really need the additional cost of SPF 50?
How to Apply Your Sunblock
More than the SPF, it is more important for sun and sea lovers to make sure that the sunblock is used well before swimming or exposing skin to the sun. Just as important -follow strictly the instructions to reapply. Once burning starts, no amount of sunblock will prevent it. Using half the amount of an SPF 50 sunblock does not mean that you get SPF 25 protection. Doing this means that your skin is inadequately protected and the chances of sun damage very high.
